2021 Winners
Finalists for the inaugural Kāpura Hutt Valley Sports Awards were announced by the judging panel via various media channels mid April 2021.
Winners of each category, along with an overall winner, were announced during the 27 May Awards Ceremony at the Walter Nash Centre in Taita. Wainuiomata's very own Niniwa Roberts was inducted as a Hutt Valley Sporting Legend during the ceremony. |

Karin Burger has had another outstanding season of netball. She was an integral part of the Silver Ferns which won the Constellation Cup against Australia, the Taini Jamison Trophy against England and the Cadbury Netball Series against the NZ Men’s Netball Team. She was a standout performer for the Central Pulse which retained the ANZ Premiership in 2020 and represented Netball H utt Valley in the open team playing in a Wellington Central Region tournament.

In qualifying for the Tokyo Olympics, Willis broke a world record that many thought would stand for ever. His time of 3.58.63 was the 19th year in a row, he had run a sub four minute mile. The previous record was held by the legendary John Walker. Willis has qualified for his 5th Olympic Games with Dame Valerie Adams being the only other athlete to match this remarkable achievement. He continues to run under the banner of Lower Hutt Athletic’s Club. Award accepted by Nick’s father.

The Taita District Premier Men’s side had the most successful season ever in its 84-year club history.
The team qualified for all three of Cricket Wellington’s major premier club finals. They lifted the Ewen Chatfield Trophy one-day competition in January, beating Johnsonville by nine wickets. They followed it up with qualification for the T20 Cup and Pearce Cup two-day finals, the latter for just the second time in the club’s history.
Taita lost just five games all season across all three formats. In the Ewen Chatfield Trophy, Taita had three out of the top six run scorers and two out of the top five wicket-takers in the competition.

Gary Hollywood who resides in Silverstream is a Capital Swimming Club Head Coach who has enjoyed unprecedented success with his athletes. His swimmers include two Olympic qualifiers, three top 10 performances in the world and six swimmers who have held national open titles.

amongst the team of national title swimmers coached by Gary. He was named the NZ Swim Coaches
& Teachers Association coach of the year in 2020 and won the Brett Naylor Award for coaching the swimmer.

Fran Scholey faced a nightmare when the country went into Covid lockdown. As the Pulse CEO, she had to find a way to keep the Pulse together and pay the players. The Pulse were defending ANZ champions and emerged from the lockdown in good shape.
They retained their national title and much of the credit for the team’s ongoing success and behind the scenes organisation should go to Fran Scholey.

Gareth Fowler is one of NZ’s leading netball umpires. He officiated in all NZ test series over the past year including the Cadbury Netball Series, the Taini Jamieson Series against England, the Constellation Cup against Australia and the Men’s National Series against the Silver Ferns. He umpired in the ANZ premiership bringing up his 50th game officiating in that competition. Gareth is an integral member of the HV Netball Umpires Association, he is on their committee and tutors and mentors other umpires in the Hutt Valley.

Petone Rugby Club’s social media team of Hayden O’Toole, Mark Masina, Hope Hakopa, Ezra Iupeli & Eugene Smith are the team that pride themselves on their generational history with the club and this drives their passion for connecting the present with the past and their future athletes. The Petone Rugby Club has a storied history that dates back to 1885 and is Wellington’s third oldest rugby club. Over the past few years, they have embraced sharing theirs stories regularly with a focus on all of their clubs’ achievements including the rise of the Ponies and the on-going encouragement for girls to get involved in our national game. With nearly 4k followers on Facebook and over 2.1k followers on Instagram plus weekly podcasts that stream on all major platforms including Spotify, this team of volunteers have been an outstanding contributor in promoting their sport from grass roots through to their elite athletes.
Recently selected in the NZ Black Sox Softball Squad, Tane Mumu is described as the “hottest young talent” of the last domestic season as a consistent leadoff batter for Hutt Valley Dodgers & Hutt Valley Men.
This multi-talented young man was a part of the Scotts College 1st XV to win the College Sport Wellington Premier Final, and was also selected in the New Zealand U18 Baseball Team. It is in softball that Tane has made his mark with numerous senior appearances with the Hutt Valley Men’s National Fastpitch Team, the Hutt Valley Fastball 45 Team, the Dodgers Premier Men’s Team where he was named MVP at the prestigious Vic Guth Tournament in Auckland and more recently the Central Region U19 team which won the Easter Classic in Auckland where he was named the top batter.

Diana Galloway has achieved in the highly disciplined sport of Squash with a national A Grade status. Winner of the Masterton Open and Red Star Open she was also runner up in four other senior open grade tournaments. She is ranked the top Wellington Junior Player and won the College Sport Wellington Girls Squash Championships Diana has been selected in the NZ Junior Squash team for the Oceania Squash Championships and the World Junior Squash Championships.

In 2020, brothers Joel and Luka Dunwoodie coached and umpired the majority of the Naenae Hockey Club Junior games. They demonstrated real dedication by being on the side line at every junior game played. Without them, our junior hockey programme would have folded. Joel coached the Naenae/Rata St School Year 5-6 team, while Luka coached the Naenae/Rata St School Year 3-4 team. Both also umpired Saturday morning games for their own Club and for others to allow coaches to concentrate on coaching.
During the 2020 season they were both umpires at the Wellington Hockey Association U11 Development Hub Tournament. In 2020, Joel in Year 11 captained the Naenae College 1st XI whilst Luka who was only Year 9 played in the same team. The Hutt Valley Hornets 16U Boys Baseball Team have had a clean sweep of all major tournaments played in this year. Winners of the Nelson 16U Labour Weekend Tournament, Winners of the Wellington 16U Sunday Travel League and culminating in the grand prize by taking out the United Airlines 16U Baseball New Zealand National Title. In doing so, they became the first team in the history of Baseball in New Zealand to win a national 16U title by a team outside of Auckland.

At only 12 years of age Erin Knox is already showing the dedication and commitment required to become a high performing athlete. Even though Covid prevented many events going ahead, Erin was still able to train in a make shift pool in her backyard. She won 3 gold medals in the Manawatu Winter Swimming Champs, recorded 3 personal bests at the Wellington short course champs finishing 4th, 6th and 7th against able-bodied swimmers and was named dSport Swimmer of the Year. Selected in the dSport Talent ID programme she was also awarded the Swimming Wellington Swimmer with a disability award.
