Finalists announced
Derek Wilshere, Convener of the Judging Panel announced the 2016 Finalists today.
Selecting the finalists from almost 100 nominations was particularly difficult he said.
“Increasing the catchment to include Upper Hutt not only increased the response but has added a number of interesting and unusual sports to the Awards. These include Shooting, Horse Racing, several cycling sports and various disciplines of Martial Arts alongside our more traditional Sports”.
Wilshere said the judges were particularly challenged by the number of young athletes nominated.
Their calibre was exceptional ranging from International performance down to champion school and club level. A number of Sport Wellington 2015 Sportspersons of the Year were included. This augurs well for the future and underlines the major contribution our two cities, their schools and sports clubs make to our region.
We will announce the winners at the Sports Awards Celebration, in the outstanding new venue the Walter Nash Centre in Taita on Thursday 19 May.
“The ceremony will be bigger and brighter than ever,” he promised.
