History of HCSA
Mark Nicholls, John Reid, Mark Sorenson, Jill Westenra, Tana Umaga, Malcolm Dunford, Tamsyn Leevey, Naomi Shaw, Ewen Chatfield (The Naenae Express), Nick Willis and Mark Brown are just a few of the famous sportspeople who have called Hutt City home.
Hutt City has always had more than its share of top sportspeople, administrators and officials.
The Petone rugby club boasts a staggering 30 All Blacks, including Ken Gray, Andy Leslie and Tana Umaga. Both Leslie and Umaga captained the All Blacks. Some of our greatest softballers have played for clubs like Cardinals, Railways and Saints. The current Black Sox captain, Rhys Casley, grew up in Wainuiomata and plays for Dodgers. Hutt Districts Cricket Club produced the great John Reid (who went to Hutt Valley High School with Ron Jarden) and numerous New Zealand and first-class representatives.
In athletics Chantal Brunner, Penny Hunt and Olympic silver medallist Nick Willis have all pounded local streets. World mountain running champion Jonathan Wyatt built up his stamina on the Western Hills and three times Coast-to-Coast winner Jill Westenra trained locally.
Jorge Sandoval has organised the Tour of Wellington for 25 years from his Stokes Valley home.
Michael Campbell is a long time member of Manor Park, as is super coach Mal Tongue, whilst Mark Brown calls Shandon home.
At 2010's Football World Cup, two Petone players James Bannantyne and Andy Barron featured for the All Whites.
In 2010 you could pick an entire team of NRL players who began their league careers in Hutt City. Johnny Lomax rose to fame playing for Wainuiomata, arguably the most well known league club in the country. The Hutt Hockey Club has been the home to many well known families, including the Miskimmin, Gallen, Falconer and Jenness clans. When the last Hutt City Sports Awards before 2011 were held, in 1988, current SPARC boss Peter Miskimmin was the overall winner.
Boxing, table tennis, waterpolo, orienteering, rowing, squash and basketball are just some of the other sports Hutt City has excelled in.
Over the years our sportspeople have not always got the recognition they deserve. The organisers of the Hutt City Sports Awards want to make sure that future and current local sporting talent is recognised for their hard work and success.
The Hutt City Sports Awards were held annually from 2011 to 2015 before merging with the Upper Hutt Sports Awards to create the Hutt Valley Sports Awards in 2016.
