Hutt Valley Sports Awards Mayoral Citation Steve Tew - Hutt City Mayor, Ray Wallace
Presented by Mayor Ray Wallace at the 2016 Hutt Valley Sports Awards, 19 May 2016.
“It gives me great pleasure tonight to present a Mayoral Citation to a former resident of Hutt City, an old boy of Hutt Valley High School and a former player from the old Hutt Rugby Club known these days as Hutt Old Boys Marist.
Steve Tew, Kia Ora and on behalf of both Hutt City and Upper Hutt Welcome home.
A Mayoral Citation is not something the City gives out very often. In fact, in my 6 years as Mayor there have only been four.
I want to acknowledge your Academic success as a Masters graduate in Recreation and Administration. Your role as Secretary General of New Zealand Universities Sport prior to your General Manager position at what is now known as Sport New Zealand.
As the Chief Executive Officer of both Canterbury Rugby Union and the Crusaders franchise your leadership and vision was to be the genesis of a dynasty at both NPC and Super Rugby levels in the new professional era of NZ Rugby.
After the disappointment of New Zealand losing the co-hosting rights of the 2003 Rugby World Cup you led the delegation along with Prime Minister Helen Clark, local Wainuiomata lad Tana Umaga and the late Jock Hobbs on behalf of New Zealand to host the 2011 Rugby World Cup.
After the All Blacks shock exit from 2007 Rugby World Cup in France you stood alone against the tide of public opinion and reappointed Graham Henry to head our 2011 campaign. History will recall that we won that Cup and Graham Henry was knighted for his service.
Under your Leadership, the All Blacks have played historic games in Tokyo, Chicago and few will ever forget the images of our team in Apia Samoa in 2015.
That was the beginning of the All Black campaign to win Back to Back Rugby World Cups and become the first team in history to defend the Rugby World Cup 2015 successfully.
Along the way there was a Global Financial Crisis for you to deal with, the securing of a new broadcast deal and new sponsorships from Adidas and AIG.
And of course, the most recent Global Accolade with the All Blacks winning Laureus World Team of the Year Award.
Behind all that success is World Class Leadership driven by strategy, vision and the pursuit of excellence.
An outstanding Leadership group led by a man regarded as the game’s Premier CEO in World Rugby rarely seen in Public.
Tonight we stand as one to honour one of Hutt Valley’s very own.”
